The importance of supervision:
Supervision is more than just keeping an eye on children; it involves actively ensuring their safety, promoting their development, and maintaining a secure and stimulating environment, as well as being critical to the safety of children and helps protect children from harm and hazards that may arise in their daily experiences.
A well-structured supervision plan is the foundation of achieving these objectives in early childhood education and care settings.

The approved provider nominated supervisor(s) and all educators must ensure that every child at the service is adequately supervised all time.

Adequate supervision means:

that an educator can respond immediately including when a child is distressed or is in a hazardous situation
knowing where children are at all times, and monitoring their activities actively and carefully.
It is determined by a range of factors, including the following:

  • The number of children you have with you
  • The number and positioning of adults, ensure there is communication of where all adults will be positioned.
  • Each child’s current activity, for example, physical activities, art activities and playing with others
areas where the children are engaging in the activities, in particular the visibility and accessibility of these areas.
  • Adults’ knowledge of each child and each group of children.
  • The need for educators to move between areas when children move from their current areas.

Regulation 115:  Premises designed to facilitate supervision.
The approved provider of a centre-based service must ensure that the education and care service premises (including toilets and nappy change facilities) are designed and maintained in a way that facilitates supervision of children at all times that they are being educated and cared for by the service, having regard to the need to maintain the rights and dignity of the children.

Quality area 2- Children's health and safety: Element 2.2.1 Supervision.
At all times, reasonable precautions and adequate supervision ensure children are protected from harm and hazard
